Tooling around on the back roads and highways And fooling around with our friends We would cut out of school after two on a Friday So fast it would give us the bends We were restless and bored but we couldn’t decide If we wanted it ever to end Yeah it was the school year Or it was the summer We’re still back there somewhere The Hutchinson Parkway ran north and south Like a vein down the length of an arm Back when we were immortal a gun in the mouth Wasn’t too much to keep us from harm Divine intervention or accident The world was our lucky charm Yeah it was the school year Or it was the summer We’re still back there somewhere Remember the time when we all got suspended For skipping on school we were tripping on acid They frog-marched us back to the building like prisoners It didn't kick in till we got near the schoolyard We kept it together like hardened professionals Nothing was marked on our permanent record Let’s make a permanent record Of all our bad calls Our downfalls Were too small to really matter They linger behind us I think to remind us Of how it happened That we made mistakes Without leaving a trace Of a bitter lesson When I heard about John I couldn’t believe it It seemed so impossibly wrong He sat in my chem class in an old Black Flag T-shirt How could someone like that just be gone He'd always seemed like he could take it or leave it Way back when our days were so long Yeah it was the school year Or it was the summer It was the school year Or it was the summer It was the school year Or it was the summer We’re still back there somewhere

You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone You’re gonna miss me when I’m gone In the end It’ll make Such a beautiful song But you’re gonna miss me when I’m gone Start out right love End up wrong Start out right love End up wrong In the end It’ll break Into beautiful song And you’re gonna miss me when I’m gone At the end of the day Gonna weep Gonna pray At the end of the year Gonna wade In your tears Bed is empty Night is long Bed so empty Night so long In the end Just the ache Of that beautiful song And you’re gonna miss me when I’m gone

about

In 2010 and 2011, Sweet Soubrette often performed as a trio, with Heather Cole on violin and drummer Mike Dobson on marimba. A couple of new songs came into being in this arrangement, “You’re Gonna Miss Me” and “Permanent Record,” but they never migrated into the full band format and didn't make it onto the following album, Days and Nights.

However, they were recorded—or partly. Stefan Heger, Sweet Soubrette’s longtime mastering engineer, invited the band to do a live recording in the Henry de Jur Playhouse in NYC, and we recorded the ukulele, vocals and marimba parts there. The plan was to record the violin separately and mix it together, but the tracks sat unfinished for five years. Until now.
